APEL – Portuguese Publishers and Booksellers Association

APEL is the Portuguese Publishers and Booksellers Association, a national non-profit organization of public utility, established since 1927. APEL represents, manages, promotes and defends generally speaking the publishing industry, in particular publishers, booksellers and distributors, both at a national and international level. Reading, copyright, freedom of expressing and freedom of publishing, cultural diversity are among the highest priorities of the association.

Since 1931, APEL organizes Lisbon Book Fair and has supported the organization of some book fairs throughout the country. It also organizes and manages the Portuguese collective stand in the Frankfurt Book fair and other international book events.
APEL has been operating the National ISBN Agency, since 1988. Throughout the years has become a reference service in Portugal, serving the purposes of national publishers and cooperating, on a regular basis with Portuguese Language African Countries and East Timor.
APEL is an active member of Federation of European Publishers (FEP), whose President is currently a Portuguese publisher, of the European Booksellers Federation (EBF), of the International Publisher Association (IPA), of the Grupo Ibero-Americano de Editores (GIE) and of CERLALC.
