In recent years, the trade of rights has been playing a crucial role within the publishing houses: as for the import, to start building a catalogue and to offer readers voices from other countries, as for the export, to bring the value of Italian publishing abroad and gain on investments in publishing new authors, or in welcoming a successful author. The report “Merchants of stories. Report on the import / export rights in 2016”, published by Associazione Italiana Editori, aims to analyze the situation of import / export in Italy, in particular through a study by AIE Research Department on behalf of ICE, the agency for the promotion abroad and internationalization of Italian companies. The study was  conducted by consulting directly with publishers (from small ones to big publishing groups) to better understand the processes of internationalization and to analyze the directions in which we are moving, using geo- editorial coordinates that compare the number of titles sold and purchased, the genres these titles belong to and the areas of the world Italian publishing houses interact with. Goal of this publication is to provide an overview as complete as possible to better understand the current situation, and begin to hypothesize future routes.
