It’s October and the Frankfurter Buchmesse welcome the publishing and media industry with a variety of activities. One of the focal points of the fair this year is underlined by the slogan “Translate. Transfer. Transform” which goes further than the mere translation of a text into another language: transfer ideas, transform mind settings, transfer stories into other creative industries, and more

This matches perfectly with the spirit of ALDUS UP; moreover, together with many other partners, the fair offers a long list of events that tackle all the project lines like diversity and inclusion, accessibility, translation, reading promotion, facts regarding the European book market, matchmakings with the film industry, insights into challenges at different book fairs and also more technical approaches like methodologies for surveys on reading promotion.

All events are in English. Admission is free, unless differently specified.

Enjoy the programme, enjoy the Buchmesse!

ALDUS UP will be represented in the collective stand of Innovation and European projects in Hall 4.0 Stand H79. Together with ALDUS UP, two EU projects Möbius and STARTS will be hosted together with the European initiative CreativeShift and the innovation project Contentshift, promoted by the Börsenverein.

A cornerstone towards comprehensive data on European reading habits

10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.

Guest of Honour Spain professional stage (Hall 4.1 D4)
Presentation of a new common methodology for surveys on reading habits in Europe (ERICS). The partners of Aldus Up present the EuRopean Item Core Set for Reading Surveys (ERICS), which provides a basic framework for the different national surveys to compare key figures on reading habits. The results of the reading surveys in Spain and Norway will be presented as an example of the integration of this methodology, that can be supplemented by further individual variables depending on the focus of the survey in each country. The aim is to implement this common methodology in order to make the results of future surveys more comparable between European countries and thus to obtain a comprehensive overview of the development of reading in Europe. The main elements in ERICS were presented this year: http://www.aldusnet.eu/k-hub/surveyreading- habits-europe-state-art/”

Publishers and all the players in the value chain are working to incorporate accessibility into digital mainstream production and distribution channels, thus providing the same titles to everyone.

The seminar will focus on three key aspects of accessibility:

  • Born accessible publications;
  • Image descriptions;
  • Accessibility metadata

Pathways into children’s books publishing

10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

4C Room Alliance

Children’s literature and publishing should reflect the diversity of the world we live in – from the stories and characters on the page, to the writers and illustrators that create them, to the editors, art directors and designers who publish them. So that’s why Pathways provides illustration courses that nurture aspiring illustrators and writers, as well as opportunities for young people to learn about publishing. Their courses are for anyone who wants to make children’s books, but we also create special opportunities for aspiring artists from backgrounds that are under-represented in children’s books, so they can fulfil their dreams of creating books for the next generation.

Speakers: Dylan Calder (Pathways, UK), Rachel Denwood (Simon & Schuster, UK), Elorine Grant (Harper Collins, UK)

Inclusion and Accessibility in different regions of the world

11:30 a.m. – 12:30 a.m.

Accessibility, as the word suggests, involves designing strategies and systems to optimise access. How can this be achieved in children’s books? How can publishers give equal access and opportunities to a wider and diverse audience, including minority groups? In this panel, we’ll discuss about projects and experiences in publishing more accessible books, from both the content and the production perspective. Our guests from Iran, Mexico and Brazil will give us insights on this subject.

Speakers: Mónica Bergna (Alboroto, México), Lulu Lima (Mil Caramiolas, Brazil), Sahar Tarhandeh (TUTI Books, Iran)

Climate change, narrative & audience development in children’s books in different contexts

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

4C Room Alliance

Climate change is on everyone’s lips. Young people are demonstrating for respect for the environment across Europe, for example, under the term Fridays for Future. The UN has taken climate change under one of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”.

How is this content incorporated into children’s books so that the content is more long-lasting and not just a momentaneous trend? How do publishers in different cultural contexts respond to this issue?  The non-fiction segment in children’s books is growing. Is there a chance to reach new target groups? How do these books reach their readers?

Speakers: Denise Johnstone‐Burt (Walker Books, UK), Ayushi Saxena (Art1st Enterprise Pvt Ltd, India), Brad Harris (Imagnary House, South Africa)

Reading Images: the importance of Picture Books to encourage children to read

2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

4C Room Alliance

Today, we all know that picture books for young readers help to promote literacy, vocabulary skills, sentence structure and story analysis. Picture books are an important part of learning how to read in a wider sense: children learn to recognize sounds and patterns within the spoken language, they improve comprehension, but also develop a love for reading and improve their social & emotional skills through the reading of visuals. How do publishers and facilitators like Festivals enhance the relevance of picture books and promote their importance? We will be sharing the experience of picture book makers and reading promoters from three different regions: Spain, UK and the Baltic countries (Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia).

Speakers: Justinas Vancevičius (Children’s World, Lithuania), Dylan Calder (Pop Up Projects CIC, UK), Simone C. Ehmig (Stiftung Lesen, Germany)

Bookfair Directors Talk

1:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m.

Frankfurt Studio (4.0 Room Europa)

International book fair and trade show directors have a unique view of the world publishing industry, with many of the book business’ challenges and opportunities directly reflected in the design and focal points of their shows each year. In this discussion – presented in association with ALDUS UP — we hear from several leading fairs’ executives with sharp insights on the industry and readers their shows serve. In some cases, accessibility is a key concern, while at other fairs, rights-trading markets may be central to the shows. Some directions see minority inclusion and diversity of production to be a top focus, while in others the promotion of reading and transnational mobility are priority topics. Common cause and varied approaches are the keys to these experts’ accomplished programming.

Speakers: Eva Orúe (Feria del Libro de Madrid, Spain), Mamadou Aliou Sow (Conakry International Children’s Book Fair, Guinea), Rex How (Taipei International Book Fair, Taiwan), Yoel Makov (Jerusalem International Book Forum, Israel)
